Focus on Metal Recovery at RWM 2019

By Paul Fears | 08 August 2019

The focus on the Bunting stand at RWM 2019 (11 & 12 September, NEC, Birmingham, UK) is recovering and separating metals from secondary ‘waste’ materials.  Working production-sized metal separators separating metals are on display on stand P1, right by the entrance to the show.

Recycling has never had a higher profile.  The ongoing backlash against single-use plastics is pressurising producers, users and governments to take action.  Separating metals is vitally important in the successful recycling of most secondary materials.

Magnetic Separators are a feature on most recycling plants.  In pre-sorted refuse operations, Overband Magnets recover steel cans and Eddy Current Separators reclaiming aluminium beverage cans.  In secondary metal recycling operations, large Scrap Drums (both permanent and electro) remove large steel before the remaining non-magnetic mix is fed over an Eddy Current Separator to separate non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, zinc and copper.  The Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator provides a final stage of separation, recovering fragmented stainless steel.

The high-profile plastic waste recycling sector relies on technology to cleanse the recovered material.  Commonly, Overband Magnets remove large ferrous metals, Drum Magnets extract smaller ferrous metals, and Eddy Current Separators eject non-ferrous metals.  In some plastic recycling operations, such as for PVC windows, the Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator removes problematic stainless steel.  Prior to bagging and after size reduction, the plastic is passed through a Metal Detector to ensure that the final recycled material is metal-free.

On stand P1, visitors will witness demonstrations on a production-sized Eddy Current Separator, Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator, and TN77 Metal Detector.

Additionally, RWM is the first UK show to feature the new ElectroMax Overband Magnet.  Launched in April 2019, the ElectroMax Overband Magnet is 185% stronger and 25% lighter than equivalent Permanent Overband Magnets.

“RWM is an important technology showcase for the waste and recycling sector,” said Simon Ayling, Bunting Magnetics Europe’s Managing Director.  “Separating metal is dynamic and eye-catching.  With our stand next to the show entrance, we intend to catch the imagination of visitors by operating production-sized equipment.”
